Desexing
WHAT IS NEUTERING OR DESEXING?

Neutering is the surgical removal of part or all of an animal’s reproductive organs. In Hong Kong, neutering is sometimes called “desexing”.

A more specific term for this procedure is “spaying” for female animals and “castration” for male animals.

Spaying a female animal involves the removal of the uterus and ovaries.

Castration of male animals involves the removal of both testicles.

These are routine operations which require a general anaesthetic; patients usually recover quickly after the surgery.

In addition, neutering has many additional benefits to animals:

HEALTH BENEFITS

Desexing reduces the risk of prostate, testicular, uterine and mammary gland diseases and cancers in cats & dogs.

URINE SPRAYING

Dogs and cats are less likely to mark their territories by spraying when neutered (spraying = urinating indiscriminately on furniture, up walls etc).

ESCAPING

The drive to mate is one of an animal’s strongest instincts. For instance, if a female cat in heat finds a way outside, it will attract unneutered males from the neighbourhood. When unneutered dogs are kept indoors, they might turn their attention to “mating” furniture or even people!

AGGRESSION

Unneutered dogs are generally more aggressive than their neutered counterparts which makes it easier for them to get into fights.

UNWANTED VISITORS

Unneutered female dogs come into heat twice a year for about three weeks each time. A bitch in heat usually attracts scores of visiting dogs to her door!

PHANTOM PREGNANCIES

Sometimes non-desexed bitches can have false pregnancies when their body “thinks” they are pregnant - this can result in odd behavior and be very stressful for the dog.

WILL NEUTERING CAUSE WEIGHT PROBLEMS?
No, it shouldn’t if exercise and diet is monitored appropriately.

HOW MUCH WILL NEUTERING COST?
It depends on the type of animal, the size and the gender. Compared with the cost of caring for numerous offspring or treating possible diseases, the cost of desexing is minimal!

WHEN IS A GOOD TIME TO NEUTER MY PET?
Regardless of gender, a cat or a dog can reproduce from 5 to 6 months old, so the sooner the better.

Please contact 2368 1518 for more information or to make an appointment to desex your pet.
Dentistry

Your pet’s teeth should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian for any early signs of a problem and to keep your pet’s mouth healthy.
A full 85 percent of pets have been reported to have periodontal disease by 3 years of age and will get worsen as they grow older if effective preventive measures are not taken.

Early detection and treatment are critical because advanced periodontal disease can cause severe problems and pain for your pet.

The process begins with an oral exam of your pet’s mouth by our veterinarian. Thereafter professional dental cleaning which includes scaling (to remove dental plaque and tartar) and polishing (similar to the process used on your own teeth during your regular dental cleanings) under general anaesthesia may be recommended to allow early detection and treatment of dental disease.

It is important to note that “non-anesthetic” teeth cleaning is not comparable to the above service. We do not recommend dental cleanings without anesthesia because they do not allow cleaning or inspection below the gumline, where most dental disease occurs, and can result in unnecessary stress, pain or injury to your pet.

Although general anesthesia will always carry some risks, your veterinarian will make recommendations based on your pet’s overall health and the health of your pet’s teeth and provide you with options to consider.

Dental homecare is also essential at home, regular brushing of your pet’s teeth is the single most effective thing to do to keep your pet’s teeth healthy in between professional dental cleanings. Studies have shown that by brushing your pet’s teeth three times a week was adequate to maintain healthy teeth and gums, but daily brushing was needed to control existing gingivitis.

Toothpaste and Brushing
Most dogs accept brushing, but cats can be a bit more resistant – patience and training is important. Never use human toothpaste for a pet as this contains foaming agents which are not meant to be swallowed y by your pet. Animal toothpastes come in special flavors (chicken, seafood, and malt) and all are expected to be swallowed.Finger brushes are available and are smaller for puppies and kittens.

General surgery

The clinic provides general surgical procedures, including bladder stone surgery, pyometra surgery, foreign body removal and other soft tissue surgery.

Laser Therapy

Vertebral Column
MLS Laser Therapy is recommended as a non-invasive pain management technique that can provide analgesic effects for our patients to reduce swelling and inflammation. It can be used on pets that has spondyloarthritis, a joint disease of the vertebral column. Spondyloar-thritis may cause prominent pain of the spine and, sometimes, neurological deficits.

Joints
Osteoarthritis causes joint pain and stiffness in our pets. Photons of MLS laser energy can penetrate deeply into tissue, improve knee joint function and relieve joint pain in pets with osteoarthritis.

Skin Wounds
MLS Laser can be used to heal superficial skin wounds. This is especially useful for pets who suffer from pressure sores caused by prolonged recumbency due to orthopedic or neurologic conditions. MLS Laser can accelerate wound recovery process, alleviate skin redness and infection.

Gingivitis
MLS Laser can be used to lessen the discomfort caused by gingivitis.

Hospitalisation service

Our clinic has specially set up a dog-staying area and a cat-staying area to reduce the tension of cats. Each hospital cage is equipped with a constant temperature system to help pets keep warm and recover.

In addition, there is also an isolation ward for pets with highly infectious diseases to stay in the hospital.

Oxygen Therapy
Many pets have various problems, such as congestive heart failure, lung cancer or cardiovascular disease, lung problems, etc., which cause the lungs to not bring enough oxygen to other parts of the body. The working principle of oxygen therapy is to increase the oxygen concentration in the plasma with high concentration of oxygen, so that the oxygen can be diffused into the animal cells at a longer distance, thereby promoting the treatment.
Vaccination
Essential Vaccinations:
  • By law, all dogs above 5 months of age must be vaccinated against rabies and licensed with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD).
  • Dogs above the age of 12 weeks/3 months can be vaccinated against rabies.
  • The dog license must be renewed and the vaccination must be repeated every 3 years.
  • Cats can also be vaccinated against rabies.

Of the above diseases, Canine Distemper, Parvovirus and Leptospirosis are of particular concern.

Canine Distemper and Parvovirus are especially common in pet shop puppies.

Leptospirosis vaccinations do not provide complete protection against this disease, please speak to your veterinarian for more information.

This combination vaccine protects cats, in particular young kittens, against these highly contagious and often fatal diseases. In particular, upper respiratory tract viruses, such as Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis and Calicivirus, collectively known as “Cat Flu”, kill many kittens ever year.

Laboratory tests

In addition to our own laboratory tests, the clinic also provides pet export test items, such as rabies vaccine antibody and various parasite tests, and sends them to approved laboratories.

In addition, cytological and histopathological tests are also provided to assist in the diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment.

Health certificate

The clinic has a pet immigration department, and there are dedicated colleagues who are responsible for export documents, which greatly reduces the owner’s troubles.

Our veterinarian will provide professional advice to ensure that the pet reaches its destination safely.

Referral service

In view of the fact that different diseases may require different specialist management, the clinic provides referral services to ensure that pets receive the most appropriate treatment.
